Our primary focus lies in the exploration of authentic historical textures to enhance the local character of Western Australia, both through integrated and standalone artworks. Our goal is to create a tangible and meaningful connection to the surrounding environment, showcasing the diverse historical fabric of Oxford Street.

In our artistic journey, we are particularly intrigued by the significant role Chinese migrants have played in shaping the development of Perth. We aim to highlight and celebrate their extensive contributions to this place through our artwork. Drawing inspiration from the architectural elements found in the Perth Lakes, which were historically connected to early market gardens, we seek to establish a strong connection to this heritage. It is worth noting that our workshop is situated within the Perth Lakes system, adjacent to the remaining Lake Sutherland, further deepening our link to this area and influencing our current studio and teaching practices.

Our artistic approach on this site also incorporates references to the previous car-yard that once occupied the space. To capture the essence of the car-yard aesthetic, we acquired a mini car from the City of Vincent, which we believe harmonizes well with the site's historical context. By blending the car-yard aesthetic with the significance of the Perth Lakes and Chinese market gardeners, we aim to create a unique fusion of themes.

During our research, we discovered that early market gardens flourished alongside the Perth Lakes, and Chinese immigrants from Guangdong Province played a pivotal role in developing innovative farming techniques within the Australian landscape. Delving further, we identified and studied the native flora and fauna specific to the Perth Lakes. Our intention was to integrate images of this environment into traditional Chinese ceramics, establishing a Sino-Australian vernacular within the public realm. This merging of cultures creates a sense of familiarity and foreignness, both for locals and visitors, which is unique to this place.

Approaching the mini with a playful and unexpected perspective, we envisioned it as something Instagrammable - capturing attention and inspiring social media sharing. Our process involved creating moulds from the existing mini and reconstructing it using glass-reinforced concrete. On its surface, we embedded narratives of the Chinese market gardeners, alluding to the aesthetics of blue and white ceramics. To inject an element of whimsy, we added a tree in the back, imbuing the artwork with a touch of the absurd.

Through this artistic endeavour, we aim to create an engaging and thought-provoking installation that invites viewers to reflect on the intertwining histories of the Chinese community, the Perth Lakes, and the vibrant local culture. By seamlessly merging elements of the past with contemporary artistic expression, we hope to captivate and inspire a deeper appreciation for the unique heritage and stories that shape the fabric of Oxford Street.
