CLIENT: SCULPTURE BY THE SEA
LOCATION: BONDI BEACH
COMPLETED: 2023
This sculpture process began with our participation in the 2022 Sculpture by the Sea in Cottesloe. We were honoured to receive the Andrea Stretton Memorial invitation to exhibit at Bondi. Building upon our 'Super Nature' series, the proposed concept explores this car part theme and materiality. We were drawn to the polyethylene material found in car panels, which is produced within our Pickle District Arts Precinct. As this material currently cannot be recycled and ends up in landfill, we aim to give it new life by transforming it into a dynamic sculptural object.
'Super Nature' takes the plastic automotive material and transforms it into an 'oceanic organic form.' Through this sculpture, we showcase the extraordinary potential of ordinary industrial materials used in unconventional and creative ways.
The supernatural reference speaks to technological evolution and the artist's role within technology environments. Our sculpture process seeks to create a form that appears as an emerging technology, specifically an ocean-inspired morphology-driven object array.
The sculpture consists of 18 shell components, weighing 3kg each, interconnected using automotive looming and wire harness material. Galvanized brackets internally link these components to the shells. The entire sculpture is composed of these components and will be assembled on-site using hand tools. The sculpture will rest passively on the ground plane, enveloping the exposed rock surface at Bondi. Additional measures will be taken to securely attach the forms to the rock.
This project is a collaboration between Jon Denaro, Sculptor, and VOXLAB, Arts Production Company.
